Good-bye Old Friend

I killed a friend today.  My old P166 server is finally dead.  (The move to a new server was delayed by me needing a new CPU fan.)

It is sad for me to turn off a computer for the final time, especially one that served me daily for so long.  I've learned a lot on that machine.  You come to know it by its normal delays, sounds, misc quirks, etc.

I probably bought the machine in 1996 or 1997 while at Gateway.  I think there was some deal where we sold our old ones as used and upgraded to these 166's.  In those 12 years the machine wouldn't have been off for more than a few hours... total.  Just for hard drive upgrades or when I moved it into a rackmountable case, or when I moved to Toronto and then Ajax.  It was my main machine, then secondary toy, and then the main network workhorse at least since we moved to Ajax.  It hasn't been off for 1 second in the last 1134 days.

It has no use anymore.  You can get that much processing power in a handheld (I think the iphone has a 600+ MHz ARM processor) at FAR less power usage.

So it is done.  It is off, and likely will stay off forever.
Good-Bye old friend.

Since I started dating Brian in 1996, I guess I say my farewells as well.
Good-bye.
