GREEN DAY
that was an AMAZING concert. best i've seen? i don't know... it would be close. The Summersault concert with Our Lady Peace and The Smashing Pumpkins was the previous runaway leader, but i thought nothing would come close to that.
They started out with their title song from the latest record, American Idiot. They crowd went crazy and stayed that way until the end of the show. At most concerts only the few crazies in the front bounce and wave for every song, but i'd say 80% of the some 30 thousand people were active. The band _really_ worked the crowd too. They often had the crowd chanting and cheering between songs.
At one point they picked 3 people from the audience: a drummer, a bass player, and a guitarist. These guys were awesome ! They picked the drummer fist, who was ok on drums. then they got a bass player who totally got in to it. next he picked some 17 year old from the crowd. this guy was sooo excited. when they gave him the guitar, he played. the two new frontmen walked out the mini runway while Billie Joe from Green Day sang the song. Billie Joe let the guitarist keep the guitar. He went nuts. The band then mumbled somthing about how that was the best impromptu band they have ever put together.
(Green Day has been around for 16.5 years. must be strange for them to have such a wide range of fans. we saw lots of kids with parents there, and both were singing along)
No matter if Green Day played new stuff, old stuff, or covers, the crowd went nuts song after song.
The set was great too. big flags, lights, signs, and FIREWORKS ! Can't do those just anywhere.
Sorry to Ed Verkley and Mandy Sproat. They both called in the middle of the concert and we let them hear a little bit of the music, as clearly we couldn't chat on the cell.
Anyway, it is 2 in the morning, and i'm sure i'm rambling. suffice to say that we had a great time, and i should write blogs when i'm more awake :-)
