via rail
i love the train.
on a return trip from Montreal this week i purchased the last seat. i joined 3 lovely senior citizens in the "group" seat, where four seats face each other, with a table in the middle.
Molly, who sat beside me, was visiting from York, England. Her brother, and brothers wife, who sat across from us, were acting as tour guide. Molly's brother has lived in Montreal for 30 years, his wife is Canadian.
We talked about their planned trip (to Niagara, St.Jacob's and Stratford), about my traveles, Molly's international adventures, the skunks in Montreal, badgers in York, my wedding, Molly's great nephews wedding, hans island, london bombings, kilimanjaro, etc. etc. great time.
we were at the end of the train (or carriage as they called it), and so we got our choice of meal last. Funny funny story, at least at the time, but the long and short of it was that we wanted fish, and they were out, we wanted duck, and they were out, we wanted beef (the 3rd and final hot meal) and they said sure, but then came back and said i'd be getting beef, but the rest would get a coldplate (salmon). Molly's brother wasn't very keen on the cold plate, so i offered to give him my beef. After some convincing, he happily agreed. (as it turned out, the cold salmon was better i think :-) We all drank wine like fish of course, since it was included with the fare.
Molly thought it was soo funny they kept blowing the horn as we crossed each "level crossing". Apparently the horn sounds quite differnet in England. The trains go much faster there too.
Anyway, you never know who you are going to meet on the train, but it is always a good time.
Good luck in your travels Molly and family, I had a lovely time.
