burnt.... chips?
Downstairs this morning while logging in to work, I noticed it was quiet... too quiet. Something was missing. The fishtank was still making its low rumble with slight waterfall noise. My stereo was off, as is normal for that time of day. The furnace was quiet, but it didn't feel cold. I moved the mouse on my main computer to wake it up from sleep mode. Nothing. The monitor is on, the power is good, ah, the whrirr of my computer fan. Do you hear it? Nope, me either. That is what was missing.
I walked in to the laundry room (where the computer actually is... long story) to see if I could determine the source of this dire issue. My nose was the first to report back findings. There is no smell quite like that of fried electronics. Instantly recognizeable from a distance, perhaps even hours after the actual fizzle.
A year (or two?) ago a very similar morning (or mourning?) ocurred. Then, after some investigation, I replaced the power supply with a much older, but still functioning power supply scavanged from the pile of electronics also found in the laundry room. I suspect this one has now met the same fate.
I wasn't planning on updating my PC until late winter. I'm not sure if I'll buy another power supply now to tide me through the winter season, or if I'll show up at the next LAN party sporting a fancy new machine. For now, Leanne may not be on MSN from home as much, as we learn to share one TV/computer.

Although, those new Intel Quad Core CPU's are out, and this could be a great excuse to, like you said, update your system. ;)
We went to Futureshop's opening here on the weekend. I forgot to check out that keyboard you have your eye on, the 21 inch monitors had me mesmerized.
